The executive council of Kurmi market traders’ association has suspended its chairman, Ya’u Karas over allegations of mishandling N5 million donated to victims of a recent fire outbreak.
Spokesperson of the council, Abdullahi ‘Yandoya accused the chairman of nepotism in the distribution of the sum donated by Abdullahi Bichi Bappa, executive secretary Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
The council has also constituted a committee to investigate how the suspended chairman distributed the donated amount.
However, in his reaction, Ya’u Karas said he remains chairman of the council as only Kano state governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has the power to remove him from office.
He debunked the allegation labelled against him and accused the council members of attempting to inflate the list of beneficiaries with the names of traders close to them who were not affected by the fire.
